Wanderlust

The open road

How tempting is the open road
To home-bound souls like me
One day, I'll leave my warm abode—
All comforts I will flee.

I'll hoist my pack upon my back
Along the road I'll go
Then branch off down some country track
Where yellow cowslips grow.

Where yellow cowslips grow

A pleasant path

There is no need for break-neck speed
When travelling at leisure
I know not where my path will lead—
And therein lies the pleasure.

With steady tread and roll'd-up bed,
And singing as I wander
To misty hills of blue I'll head
Then see whate'er lies yonder.

Misty hills of blue

A sunny, sandy beach

Perhaps the fen or mountain glen
Or sunny, sandy beaches
Somewhere beyond all mortal ken
Where'er my fancy reaches.

I'll feel the thrill of tinkling rill,
Of bubbling spring and fountain.
O'er craggy rocks their waters spill
Away beyond the mountain.

O'er craggy rocks...

A forest glade

In dappled shade of woodland glade
Where violets air their scent
And nightingales will serenade,
I'll pitch my little tent.

At night, I'll dream beside the stream
Of those I've left behind.
Until they'll join this happy scheme,
I'll travel in my mind

A dreamy stream
