It has come to my
attention that one or two people have been griping about these two fics.
(Why now? I wrote them over 4½ years ago.)
Their problem seems to be that they're
unable to see Jack as a transvestite. This suggests that either they know very
little about transvestism and/or they have based their criticisms on the first
few paragraphs of the first fic. and haven't bothered to read any further,
hence giving their readers disinformation.
My work has brought me into contact
with a number of T.V.s over the years, so here's a little information for those
who'd like to check out the facts first rather than shoot from the hip to show
off their superiority.
1. While roughly 80% of
transvestites are straight, transvestism is no indicator of sexual
preference.
2. While some transvestites will go
out in public wearing women's clothing, the vast majority would not dare
because of the social stigma attached. cf. the attitude of those who pooh-pooh
the idea of Jack in a miniskirt and black fishnet stockings.
3. Where transvestism is an entirely
solitary and personal thing, no one would guess who's a transvestite and who
isn't. It could be your bank manager, your refuse collector, your child's
teacher, a truck driver, the guy next door - or an Air Force colonel - and
you wouldn't know except by accident - much like homosexuality
used to be. So laughing at T.V.s is not that far removed from
homophobia.
4. Because it's a solitary pleasure,
transvestites often have no idea that it's actually quite common - up to about
5% of the male population - one in every twenty. They feel alone, a freak of
nature, a pervert... Feelings of guilt can cause thoughts of suicide - and
sometimes not just thoughts.
So instead of being a
smartarse, why not try for a little compassion?
